SERENDIPITY AND THE MISSING PAINTING

The Coolest Place to Be . Peoples Choice Los Gatos 2017

While attending the Los Gatos Plein Air Festival in June I was not feeling well.

On the third day with 6 paintings under my belt and after a beautiful lunch given by the organizers of the event, I set up my easel around the corner on University St and painted from 2 pm to 7 pm .This was to be my grand finale painting 8x17.  Conditions were tough, a howling hot 90 degree wind that had me holding my umbrella the entire time and I chose a nostalgic complicated row of houses with July 4th flags flying as my subject.

At 7 pm one tired artist packed up, placing my painting against the side of my car and drove off.

Realizing at 9 pm it was missing I returned to my spot to find nothing there. :(

I contacted the organizers who put out a neighbor hood alert and at 1 am succumbed to the fact it was gone and to paint some more. UGH.

I began at  5 am with a streetscape and at 10 am tired of architecture I sought trees and shady spot to sit and found Park Plaza full of magnificent redwood trees and kids playing in a fountain. It was a restorative 3 hrs of painting on a lawn, at 2 pm I hurried home to my hosts house to frame my 8 paintings.

2 ladies called to say they had seen the missing watercolor at 8:30 pm and one had placed it against a wall. That was the last we saw of it .

Luck had it, at the Gala that night the painting of the Plaza Park was awarded Peoples Choice Award .

Now this painting would never have existed if it were not for me leaving the painting in the street.

How's that for serendipity?

That Park painting was wonderful, but you also have such a great attitude towards loss and what you could not change.

I have three lovely watercolours in my living room painted by Wilfrid B Tapp. Are you related ? you sure have the watercolour gene....
